Unamuno's Dream

The Moors helped to civilize Spain, to draw it into a larger cultural orbit--the great Muslim empires of the East. The Christian barbarians resisted this effort and eventually succeeded--driving first the Jews and then Muslims from the peninsula starting in 1492.

In the late 19th-early 20th centuries, Miguel de Unamuno dreamed of Hispanizing Europe. In his eyes, Spain's retention of a native barbarism was superior to the thinly disguised barbarism of Europe north of the Pyrenees. 

Today, as the governments of barbaric Europe support the genocide of Palestinians (when have Europeans been opposed to genocide?), Spain asserts its independence.
