Now that capitalism has ruled the world unchallenged for a generation, Marxist thinking has seen a popular renewal, increasingly liberated as it has become from the old specters of McCarthyism and the Cold War. It is Sartre who tells us why: “We cannot go beyond it because we have not gone beyond the circumstances which engendered it.” It is because we have not overthrown capitalism that Marxism endures—as both a philosophical orientation and a political aspiration."
